Cheap! Okay, I said it!

Is it okay to use a banner as your business sign long term? In a word, no, they are CHEAP! Okay, I said it. But, is there anything else to say on the subject? Of course there is! Each circumstance is different and therefore the solution to your problem of signage is going to be different.

The general rule is that banners are used for marketing purposes to attract attention to an event, such as a sale. Having said that, they can also be used longer term to advertise your business. They allow you to provide much more information to the viewer and with the advent of digital printing, in full color as well.

In all honesty they are a poor choice for your main sign for your business. You certainly can use them short term while waiting for your sign but they are really not an alternative to a permanent sign. Why?

Because everyone knows that in the world of signs, banners are cheap and if you use a banner long term that is exactly the word that will come to mind when they see your banner sign month after month. They may think you are unsuccessful so you cannot afford a sign. They may think you are just cheap and therefore not a good candidate to have a business relationship with. All of these are negative and not what you want people to think of your business.

So, you are just starting out or as we all know, times are tough, what can you do that is going to be professional but inexpensive? There are ways that can keep the costs down while presenting the right message to your potential customers. Call me today to discuss the options that could work for your particular situation. What’s Going on at Roday?

We have spent the last six months re-vamping the business as we gear up for more production.  In that time we have also been very busy with signage and displays for Pulte Homes, Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Development Company, Keller Williams, Guild Mortgage Company and others.

So, what are the changes that have come to Roday?

First, our new website will be up in the next couple of weeks.  It will make it much easier for you to navigate and locate what you are looking for.

We have partners with KOMO TV in the downtown Seattle community to raise our visibility. This was an exciting opportunity for only nine companies are allowed to partner with them in a particular community.

We have put together a series of sales and what we call Flash Sales that are available only to our followers on Facebook or Twitter.  We have also decided that of course we will highlight some of our work on Facebook, it is going to be much more geared to two things.

First, information. Providing our followers with tips, tricks, and sign information that will help them.  Secondly it provides a platform for our clients and our followers to connect with us.  This is a pretty exciting part of the changes that have come to Roday.

We will also be putting into place a Referral Reward Program. We have always pretty well lived off of referrals and we think it is about time to recognize that.  So, in the future, for every referral that becomes a customer, the person who referred them will be getting a reward.

The details are still being worked out so stay tuned on that one.  You will not want to miss it!

There are other changes that we will be sharing in the coming weeks.  In the meantime, sign up to follow us on Facebook and/or Twitter.

Summer Creek Just Outside Portland Oregon

Installation at Summer Creek was done this past week and the week leading up to the installation was a busy one as we wrapped up the loose ends. It seemed like we had stacks of displays everywhere that were ready to be packed up for their trip south.

Brandon was the one that was going to be heading south to Oregon for the install and being that you cannot just run back for something you forgot or something goes sideways, he wanted to be loaded for bear — and, he was.

Sales Center DisplaysThe displays for this particular sales center were really nicely designed. Holly Sinclair over at Pulte Homes was responsible for that. Good job, Holly!

A rich wood backer was used for some of the displays which really set them off. The backers were done in 1/2″ apple ply which just so happens to have a maple face. The boards were cut, edging was added, they were sanded and then stained. A metal cleat was added to the back for installation.

The faces of the displays were digital prints mounted to black foam core with a french cleat on the back-side.

One of the interesting things that we suggested and was decided we should do it, was edge the large lifestyle pieces in stained maple. It was quite striking.
Additional lifestyle photos were also done for the office along with plot maps, wall vinyl and window vinyl. Overall, it looks wonderful.

There was one error that I think I want to address. When deciding on the color of the wood backers were focused on closely matching a maple plot table that was being used. Of course we only had a photo of it and since everyone’s computer monitor is different, we were under the impression that we had nailed it. Come to find out, once Brandon is down in Oregon that darker would have been better.

No panic. New stain was purchased and Brandon re-stained the wood on-site. Way to go!

Normally we send a sample over of the stain tot he client but we didn’t this time. Just goes to show that you don’t leave something to chance. It all turned out well though and in the end, the client was happy.

Kat Miller Photography

Stylized Orchid

We often design, print, and mount photographs for Kat Miller, a local Washington photographer.  In this instance, she was looking for artwork to be produced that would withstand being in a bathroom and obviously a framed print was not the answer.  Plus,  Kat wanted to keep them simple.

Stylized Hat

She chose two photos that she stylized.  We printed and mounted to 1/2″ black pvc with French cleats on the backside.

These photos can be seen at Starbucks at 400 Occidental Ave., Seattle.  You can see more of Kat’s photography on her website for Kat Miller Photography.

Vintage – A New Centex Community in Lynnwood

It’s Monday, the day after the long Thanksgiving weekend and certainly not an easy task to throw yourself into your work. But jump right in is what we need to do. One of the tasks that we are working on finishing up is the sales center displays for the Sales Center at the new Vintage Community in Lynnwood, WA.

Most things are now complete but we are still working on the sample boards and finishing up the impact logo. The frames are complete for the sample boards and the frames were adhered to the back this morning. They are now drying.

The frames are made from hemlock.  The boards are planed then cut, and sanded.  A pre-stain is then applied to permit the stain to take evenly to the soft wood.  They are then stained, permitted to dry, and then buffed out.

The frames are cut to permit an inset base piece.  This base piece is glued to the inside of the frame.  The individual sample pieces will then be glued directly to the base.

Before we could proceed this morning we had to figure out the layout of the board along with the spacing between items.  This was done with a diagram so that our fabrication team can cut all the pieces needed.

We use a stone cutting saw to cut all the stone pieces. The vinyl flooring is mounted to a piece of 1/4″ black pvc to keep it nice and flat. Most times we do not have to cut down the cabinet samples but this time there is an exception to that.

We will begin cutting tomorrow and begin mounting the pieces to the base.  We are right on time for installation on December 7th.

Note:  The impact logo is complete.  Looks great!

Vintage – A New Community, New Signage

The artwork is beginning to come off the printer for Vintage, a new community coming to Lynnwood. Being built by Pulte Group (Pulte/Centex), they will be ready for sale the first week of December.

Roday is currently putting together the displays for the sales center. They include floor plans, site map, and lifestyle photos along with custom made sample boards for materials people can choose from.

The custom sample boards are, in themselves, gorgeous. We start with a custom wood frame. The wood is cut, planed, sanded, stained, and sealed. We inset a base board to hold the samples. We cut all the samples to size, including the stone and mount them on the painted base board.

All of this is then mounted to the wall with french cleats and they are stunning.

A Sign Company’s Life Blood

I cannot remember how many times I have worked so hard to bring a job in and the feeling of victory I felt once the order was written and production began.  Of course, those are exciting moments but it’s important to remember that the small jobs should also be celebrated for they are the life’s blood of a sign company.

When one thinks about it, many small jobs are more difficult that one large one for there are things to organize, remember, and a series of different materials and processes.  It is a challenge to move from one small job to the next and then the next.

And honestly, it is the small orders that become the bread and butter of a sign company and they are the MOST important clients.  Those small orders test our skill as signmakers by offering unique sets of problems, requiring us to come up with creative solutions that not only work but that stay within the budget.  It keeps our finger on the pulse of the community as well as forces us to be knowledgeable about materials, how to use them, and constantly improving our production.

So, thank you to our clients, both big and small.  We salute you and look forward to serving you again.

Sometimes a Simple Sign is Just the Right Thing

Martha Lake Townhomes in Lynnwood were getting a bit tired of turnover of their managers and decided what they really wanted to do was to drive traffic to their website.  Being that their address was a bit long, this was the simple solution.

Measuring 30″ high and 16′ wide, it made it possible to raise the visibility of the property and drive potential renters to their website.  The sign has now been up for a bit and there is a definite rise in the numbers on their website.

Marketing signs can be simple or ornate but the most important factor is that they deliver the message, quickly and effectively.

We also added two signs on the buildings themselves.  Again, we kept it very simple to make sure that the signs could be easily read.

For the building signs we used pvc with vinyl copy.  The free-standing sign is a digital print on dibond MDO.
